Fishing Baits

Which Fishing Bait should I use?

First off, bait is optional. You do not need to use it to catch fish. It does however provide some nice benefits. There are two kinds of bait for each water type, one increases your chance of catching bigger fish, the other increases your chance of catching rare fish. A side bonus of using bait is that it seems to decrease the time it takes to get a bite significantly.

Freshwater Baits

Size Boosting Baits:
Oyster BaitLarge boost to chance to catch bigger fish in Freshwater. Obtained by salvaging Oysters.
Clam BaitMedium boost to chance to catch bigger fish in Freshwater. Obtained by salvaging Clams.
Meat BaitSmall boost to chance to catch bigger fish in Freshwater. Crafted with Cooking.
Rarity Boosting Baits:
Firefly BaitLarge boost to chance to catch rare fish in Freshwater. Obtained by harvesting Bulrush.
Woodlouse BaitMedium boost to chance to catch rare fish in Freshwater. Obtained by harvesting Bushes.
Bread BaitSmall boost to chance to catch rare fish in Freshwater. Found in Provision Containers.

Saltwater Baits

Size Boosting Baits:
Electric Eel BaitLarge boost to chance to catch larger fish in Saltwater. Obtained by salvaging Electric Eels.
Snail BaitMedium boost to chance to catch larger fish in Saltwater. Obtained by salvaging Aquatic Snails.
Fish BaitSmall boost to chance to catch larger fish in Saltwater. Crafted with Cooking.
Rarity Boosting Baits:
Glowworm BaitLarge boost to chance to catch rare fish in Saltwater. Obtained by picking up flints at night.
Nightcrawler BaitMedium boost to chance to catch rare fish in Saltwater. Obtained by picking up flints during the day.
Cheese BaitSmall boost to chance to catch rare fish in Saltwater. Found in Provision Containers.

Both Woodlouse & Nightcrawler baits are requested as a turn-in for the Town Projects. I recommend selling them in the trading post at a price higher than the better versions as people who are doing these town projects will often buy what they need straight from the trading posts. The coin you will make can then be used to buy the more efficient, yet cheaper, Firefly or Glowworm baits.

How do you equip fishing baits?

Fishing bait is equipped using the Bait Window. You can access the Bait Window by hitting R after you enter Fishing Mode. Here is what the bait window looks like:

Fishing Bait Window

As you can see you have a category for both freshwater and saltwater. You need to have the bait in your bag for it to appear inside the bait window. To equip the bait you just need to select it then click 'Equip Bait'. The window will close and you will see your equipped bait on the Fishing Mode overlay. The hook at the top of the fishing window is selected when no bait is chosen.

Fishing Poles

Types of Fishing Poles

There are 3 types of fishing poles in the game. Crafted, Dropped, and Quest Rewards.

Dropped Fishing Poles

WARNING Dropped poles may not exist in the game anymore, I did not obtain any during open beta, only closed beta. If you found one during OPEN beta please send me screenshots or video. The art for dropped poles appears to be what is used for the legendary poles now.

Dropped fishing poles are rewards from slaying certain enemies. They are not the best, but they do have some unique looks.

Dropped by: Kisare the Taskmaster (Level 32) 20 meter max cast distance
  • Tier 5 Angry Earth Fishing Pole

Fishing Gear

How do I get the fishing gear?

Tier 2 through Tier 5 rare quality fishing gear is given as rewards for doing the various parts in the Fishing Quest Line.

Tier 5 epic quality is obtained through Elite Ancient Chests, Elite Supply Chests and Supply Stockpiles which can be found in high level elite zones. These chests are on a 1 day respawn (realtime), making them extremely rare to find. The tier 5 fishing set is bind on equip, which means it is possible to find pieces of it in the trading post. Expect the prices of this gear to be astronomical at the start of the game, especially when people realize the earning potential behind the fishing skill.

What does the fishing gear look like? Currently all tiers of gear shares the same cosmetic look, here is what that looks like:

I know that was a lot to take in. You won't use all the baits, or every pole, but you do have various options along the way. In the next chapter we are going to explore the best way to Level Fishing Skill.
